D.C. Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival

Every year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in Washington D.C. in the surrounding Tidal Basin. With over 3,000 beautiful trees to see, the National Cherry Blossom Festival depends on the blooming of these trees that typically occurs in March.

Blooming at the End of March

People come from near and far to view these fantastic trees and The National Park Service (NPS) measures the growth of the trees every year to predict when the peak boom will arrive. In 2021 the peak bloom, meaning seventy-percent of the trees have blossomed, occurred on March 28th. We have a bit of time to go before the start of 2022’s blooming season, therefore it is unsure of when the season will start and the festivities will occur for the following year.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival has taken place both virtually and in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival honors American and Japanese cultures and their close ties since 1912 when the Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki gifte the trees to the United States. In addition to the gorgeous trees, The National Cherry Blossom Festival has many activities to offer such as fireworks, concerts, special exhibits, and parades to celebrate the cherry blossoms.

This route makes stops on the Tidal Basin at the Martin Luther King Jr. and Jefferson memorials. The DC circulator is free of cost, but if you’re looking for an alternative the metro is another great way of getting around the entire city.
