American Airlines has announced the launch of a new direct route between New York (JFK) and Haneda (HND), starting June 28. This exciting new route, approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), makes American Airlines the only U.S.-based airline offering direct flights between New York and Haneda. This new service will enhance travel options for passengers and provide seamless connections for those looking to explore Japan.

Dive into Japan’s Summer Festival Season
With the new direct flight, travelers from New York can easily immerse themselves in Japan’s rich culture and exciting summer festivals. One of the most anticipated events is the Aizen Festival in Osaka, held from June 30 to July 2. This festival is one of Osaka’s three major summer festivals, alongside the Tenjin Festival and the Sumiyoshi Festival.
The Aizen Festival takes place at Aizendo Shomanin Temple in Osaka and features the vibrant Hoekago Parade. The parade, which dates back to the Edo period, originally featured geishas carried in palanquins praying for business prosperity. Today, the parade includes the Aizen Musume, chosen through a public contest, adding a modern touch to this traditional celebration.
Known as Japan’s oldest summer festival, the Aizen Festival has its origins in 593 AD and marks the beginning of the yukata season in Osaka. It is a unique opportunity to experience a piece of Japan’s history and cultural heritage.

Enhanced Travel Experience
The new Haneda-New York route will not only provide a direct connection but will also complement the existing flights operated by Japan Airlines. Travelers on this route will have up to three daily flights to choose from, offering convenient and flexible travel options.
This route becomes American Airlines’ fourth direct flight to Haneda, joining daily flights from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and two daily flights from Los Angeles (LAX). Together with Japan Airlines, American Airlines will operate up to 17 daily flights between the U.S. mainland and Japan, including 10 daily flights to Haneda.
