Japanese Dog Breeds
JDogs are a man’s (and woman’s) best friend. These furry balls of love come in many shapes and sizes, and depending on where you go in the world there are various breeds. Here are some dog breeds that are specific to Japan, and make the best of friends.
Tosa
Tosas are the gentle giants of Japanese dogs. Tosas typically range from a hundred to two hundred pounds, and from 21 to 24 inches tall. Unfortunately, Tosas have a history of being bred for the intention of fighting other dogs. In more recent times, this horrible dog breeding has decreased and now, Tosas are once again being treated as family pets. Tosas are usually reddish brown, and shed very little. These easy-going dogs are the largest dog breed in Japan, yet take the longest to mature.
Hokkaido
These fluffy pups make a loyal companion! Their name stemming from the indigenous Ainu people who inhabited the Hokkaido mountains, Hokkaidos are great in the snow. Their thick fur that comes in various shades really insulate them from the harsh cold of this region. Hokkaidos are amazing dogs as they are intelligent, athletic, protective, and loving. Weighing between 44 to 66 pound and growing to be between 18 and 20 inches, Hokkaidos are a perfect medium size.
Japanese Terrier
This little buddy has a lot of fun energy in his small body! Japanese Terriers weigh a mere 5 to 9 pounds, and 8 to 13 inches tall. These little dogs usually have white fur with black and brown spots all over them, as well as cute bob tails. Japanese Terriers love to play and chase things, and are overall very excitable dogs!
