One of the most Popular Manga in Japan: Sailor Moon
Started with the Shoujo Manga
Heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, and in this case our heroine is an adorable troubled school-girl who receives magical powers that allow her to transform into the moon! Published from 1991 to 1997, Sailor Moon started out as a shoujo manga written by Naoko Takeuchi, called “Pretty soldier sailor moon.” Right away its popularity exploded, and it was made into an anime. This anime was dubbed on stations in the US and UK, and later put on Cartoon Network in 1998 which was more successful than the original dubbing. Over the years, Sailor Moon has been recreated through animated series and films.
What is Sailor Moon’s Story?
Sailor Moon’s story revolves around Usagi Tsukino who meets a talking cat named Luna, whose actual secret identity is Sailor Moon. Usagi Tsukino translates to rabbit of the moon, a fitting name for the story as East Asian lore believes that there is a rabbit that lives on the moon. The first season involves Usagi’s journey to find the “Legendary Silver Crystal” which is a magical artifact that the Dark Kingdom is also searching for. Usagai forms a team of Sailor Guardians who come together to save the galaxy from evil throughout the series. There is music, romance, action, and the power of friendship throughout this show that truly makes it entertaining for all ages.
Popular with the Cosplay Community
Sailor Moon’s wide success has led to a following in the cosplay community, as many people enjoy dressing up as Usagai and her friends! Fans appreciate Sailor Moon’s story as it represents a beautiful yet relatable female character who uses her power for good! Even though the show started in the 90s, it continues to be relevant today and is still embraced by the cosplay community and anime lovers alike.
